M Butterfly 1993

Directed by David Cronenberg.  Fascinating story, good acting, very well directed. It's about deception and self-deception. The story is based on true events which strangely made it hard for me to feel emotionally emerged in it all. I kept thinking about the actual man the Jeremy Irons role was based on. Which makes me think about art and how for me it's better to mold reality into something new that stands apart from the actual influences. I'd rather watch a documentary or a fantasy than a hybrid. Still it is a pretty good flick.

If I ever made a list of my 100 favorite movies Miyazaki could be the director with most titles in it. And Kiki would be very high up on this list. It has warmth, humanity and insight into our hopes and fears. Whatever age you are, watch this movie.

Sin of Lust 1976

Vanessa Del Rio plays a sex-surrogate. She is a lot more round bodied than later in her career but just as hot. This woman is pure sex. 

The rest of the movie isn't very good. Some people I'd rather not have seen naked in boring sexual scenes. 

The typically seventies sex-babble is interesting to hear in these very different times.

And hey, the title card is great!

La Piscine 1969

Watched it on tv some 25 years ago. My main memories were of a sensual Romy Schneider and a murder. Bought the DVD last year and today I've finally watched it again. 

So, Jane Birkin is in it. I didn't remember that. 

It's a movie about good looking people living in a beautiful house. They swim, they fuck, they enjoy life. But of course soon trouble starts. Old relationships, jealousies that kind of stuff.

My DVD has an extra disc containing the never released English language version. It has some differences. I didn't watch the entire thing but went directly to 2 things I was sure were changed. A slightly sm-like scene and the ending. I wouldn't be surprised if a  scene suggesting incestuous feelings is also missing. Haven't checked though. This alternative version is weak but shows cultural differences which is cool.

I still have to watch the interview with the writer included on the disc. Let's see what he has to say for himself.

Coffy 1973

Big hair, big cars, big guns and Pam Grier. The early seventies at their best.

I have a feeling you won't see a girlfight like the one in Coffy in contemporary movies. Great fun. Except for the razorblades in Pam's hair. Those were nasty! Women with hair like that don't need purses. They can just keep everything stored on top of their heads.

The Fury 1978

 This is the first movie from Brian De Palma after Carrie. It's interesting but problematic. Amy Irving is no Sissy Spacek and writer John Farris is no Stephen King. The acting is generally uninspired.

Luckily there is good stuff. John Cassavetes plays a very unpleasant bad guy, Carrie Snodgress is likable and the final 15 minutes are spectacular.

 I had seen this movie before but at the time hadn't recognized a young Daryl Hannah in a small role. It's always fun to spot well known actors at the start of their career.
